Young Black Woman Dies at FPA-Allred Site

BY ROSA ORTEGA

Chanelle Bryant, a 22-year-old black woman from Pasadena who was about nine weeks pregnant with her first child, died on January 14, 2004 after receiving methatrexate and cytotec at Family Planning Associates in Glendale. Her family has filed a lawsuit.

The owner of Family Planning Associates is Edward Allred, M.D., a mutli-millionaire who has a chain of abortion mills that reach to Chicago and is also owner of race tracks and race horses.

According to the Los Angeles County coroner report, Chanelle died from "sepsis and pneumonia due to Endomyometritis with abcess formation due to Termination of Pregnancy." No doctor's name appears on the coroner's investigative report, and it is presumed that, given the way methetrexate is administered cheaply by abortionists, that a nurse practitioner rather than a doctor provided the drugs to Chanelle.

Methetrexate is an anti-metabolic drug usually given to cancer patients to fight the growth of tumors. When given "off label" to pregnant mothers, methetrexate attacks the growing baby and causes it to die and be miscarried.

According to the records, Chanelle self-administered the drugs as directed and four days later was in excruciating pain. She went to the emergency at Huntington Memorial Hospital. The next day, Chanelle became progressively worse, was transferred to the intensive care unit at 1:20 p.m. and by 4:11 went into cardiac arrest. At 5:27 p.m., Chanelle was taken into surgery for an exploratory procedure to determine whether she suffered from internal bleeding or other problems, but ten minutes into the surgery she suffered another cardiac arrest and died at 5:51 p.m.

In the 1980's, Edward Allred was interviewed in a lengthy article in the San Diego Union. He revealed his motivations: "Population control is too important to be stopped by some right-wing prolife types. Take the influx of Hispanic immigrants. Their lack of respect for democracy and social order is frightening. I hope I can do something to stem that tide.... When a sullen black woman of 17 or 18 can decide to have a baby and get welfare and become a burden to us all, it's time to stop. In parts of south Los Angeles, having babies for welfare is the only industry the people have."

The following women have died at the hands of Allred abortion mills: Denise Holmes, Maria Pena, Josefina Garcia, Lanice Dorsey, Joyce Ortenzio, Tami Suematsu, Christina Mora, Susan Levy, and Chanelle Bryant.
