YOU DO NOT FOSTER UNITY
I write to protest and denounce in the strongest possible way the false dichotomy you place between His Holiness Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Roger Mahony. You describe Bishop Olmsted, in the April issue, as "not a Mahony man," the new Phoenix bishop being a man of the pope [see "Not a Mahony Man"].
Your rancorous paper does not foster Catholic unity but is inimical to the relationship between our Holy Father and Cardinal Roger Mahony, who is the metropolitan for this area of the Catholic Church.
The Rev. Juan Romero,
Administrator, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church,
Palm Springs
Editor replies: I shall let our readers decide, based upon evidence presented in Mission articles over the past ten years, whether the "dichotomy" between Cardinal Mahony and Pope John Paul II is false or not. If Father Romero has evidence counter to particular claims made in Mission articles or can demonstrate where they have been in error, I welcome him to indicate these in future letters, and I extend the same invitation to other readers. But if our articles are accurate (and I think they are), then Father Romero might at least entertain the possibility that it is not we who have been "inimical" to the relationship between the cardinal and the pope, but Mahony's actions and teachings themselves.
